The VITA 93 (QMC) architecture, explained
Quad Mezzanine Card: the next-generation flexible mezzanine concept — composable quadrant modules, high-speed connectors, air and conduction cooling. Here you find the concept and where the catalog starts.
What QMC is: the mezzanine rethought in quadrants
VITA 93 defines the Quad Mezzanine Card: the next-generation mezzanine module built on composable quadrants — the area is dosed on the I/O required, from one quadrant up to four.
The logic remains that of mezzanines: adding specialized functions to the host board without redesigning it. What changes is the size — more compact than PMC/XMC — and the connector, designed for the data rates of current PCIe generations. The specification was born for rugged systems: cooling is planned both for air and conduction, and the format suits small form factor platforms where XMC does not fit.
In the catalog the family appears alongside PMC, XMC and AcroPack as "the next generation flexible mezzanine concept": it is the direction the VITA ecosystem — the same as VPX and SOSA — is taking modular I/O. The functional families are the usual ones: acquisition, communications, avionics buses, FPGAs.

What the specification says
The concept, item by item
The quadrant, the VITA base and coexistence with XMC.3 entries
VITA 93.0
The base specification
Mechanics, connectors and cooling of the Quad Mezzanine Card: a format designed from the start for air and conduction, with the mechanical protection rugged environments demand.
Il quadrante
The composable area
The idea behind the name: the module occupies one to four quadrants of the mezzanine zone. Simple I/O fits in one quadrant; dense functions — FPGAs, fast acquisition — take the space they need.
Con l'XMC
Coexistence, not replacement
The huge PMC/XMC installed base does not disappear: QMC is for new designs — small form factors and SOSA-generation VPX — while XMC carriers keep serving the existing fleet.
Where QMC works
New defense and avionics programs, where the ecosystem is being born.
